The Renaissance
The word “renaissance” means rebirth. The Renaissance took place from around 1400 to about the 1600s. It was the rebirth from the medieval ages into the modern society. It took society from agriculture to urban living.
The Renaissance, which began in Northern Italy, helped Europe become powerful because of the new ideas and thinkers that came about. One being humanism, which lead to people starting to question authority. This lead to more conquests, a new thriving economy, and an educated middle class. There was much trading especially of the spices. The trading helped improve the economy. Art during the time of the Renaissance grew as well. The art reflected humanist beliefs. With these reasons, the Renaissance began in Nothern Italy and assisted in Europe becoming powerful once again.

Loorenzo Di Medici-A Patron
Italy was broken into city-states that were ruled powerful and wealthy families. Florence was ruled by the Medici family. Cosimo de’ Medici had control of Florence in 1434. He had a grandson named Lorenzo Di Medici or “the Magnificent”, who supported “the Renaissance idea”. He was a politician and a patron who allowed poets and artists to come and sketch statues and architecture throughout the Medici palace. The Medici family had many great contributions to Florences’ history. Florence became a symbol of the Italian Renaissance and produced many great poets, artists, architects, scholars, and scientists. With this Florence helped Europe become powerful by allowing it prosper in its artistic abilities.

Venice
Venice trade was predominating in Venice during the time of the Renaissance. The Venetians controlled the spice trade. They got spices from the Muslims, where they got it from an island in Indonesia. Salt, saffron cinnamon, cloves, pepper, ginger, and nutmeg were all trades to Venice. These spice greatly benefited Europe. There were health benefits, they helped preserve food, and the spices were used to make soap. Cinnamon, for example, could lower high blood pressure. People didn’t shower on a regular basis so the soap with the spices allowed it to have pleasant fragrances.

He has many other famous and great thinkers throughout time shown, but with this work he is putting himself in for his audience to view his as highly as all of the other great thinkers in the painting.
